About wedding photographer Andy Allan

Highland Wedding Photographer

Wedding photography is personal. For me, getting to know the couple and hearing their story is one of the most important steps to capturing the energy and the magic of a wedding. So I would like to introduce myself, and tell you a bit about how I work.

Family

I’m Andy Allan and I am a wedding and elopement photographer based in Inverness.

I am the proud Father to our two crazy kids, our cat Trudy, and devoted husband to my awesome wife Rachel.

So why wedding photography Andy?

I am a romantic at heart. I have never lived down the day I struggled to keep the tears back at a friend’s wedding. The truth is I absolutely love weddings. Witnessing two people commit their lives to each other in front of their loved ones gets me every time.

I met my wife in the Park Bar in Glasgow. She now says that I don’t know when to leave a party. But when the music is playing and the craic is flowing, I am at my happiest. A wedding is about the couple, but it is also about loved ones coming together to share in a special occasion.

As a wedding photographer I get to meet so many characters, young and old. Catching the fleeting interactions and authentic emotions of a wedding is what my photography is all about.

working with you

Ahead of your big day I will be in contact with you. I will hopefully meet in person to discuss your plans and go over any aspects of your day you’re unsure about.

Leading up to the event I’ll ask you for a list of posed shots with family and guests to be taken on the day as well as an itinerary including timings. This is so that I can work out how much time we need to put asside for this part of the day. I will then convert this information into a shootlist with timings and bring it with me on the day.

On the day, I tend to be quite a stealth operator. I use telephoto lenses, which means I can be discreet, and capture fleeting moments at a distance without the couple or the guests noticing me at work. Often, the best images end up being the candid and unguarded moments that no one spotted being taken on the day.

I also have extensive experience in low light photography techniques as well as the equipment. This allows me to capture visually appealing images regardless of light conditions. Whether that be rain, darkness or both, I can provide you with creative and beautifully lit photos.

Editing Styles for wedding photography

editing your photos

For me, timeless storytelling is more important than passing trends. You’ll notice there is a current trend for putting filters over images to give them a brown, almost caramel tone.

The reason I don’t go in for trends like this is because it risks creating photos that will end up looking dated as soon as that trend is replaced by a new one.

For me, wedding photography should have a classic editorial style that will stand the test of time and reflect the trrue colours of the environment in which they were taken.

I do make slight adjustments to colour tones, sharpness and various other aspects of the photographs. But my aim is to keep the imagery as true to life as I can.

editing your photos

I may not go in for trends, but that does not mean I am not constantly updating my craft as a photographer. You are only as good as your last wedding, and my mission is to improve with every wedding I work on.

Despite having over ten years’ experience as a wedding photographer, I still see myself as a student of photography and I’m always seeking to take my work to the next level.

This means I am always trying out new techniques and approaches to get the very best quality results possible. I regularly invest in equipment to keep me ahead of the game, to deliver the best possible visual account of my clients’ most treasured moments.

I am also a member of one of the UK’s leading wedding photography patreon groups and I’m constantly learning new techniques and practices which I then pass on to my business.

I am covered by public indemnity insurance, and I always have back-up equipment and memory cards with me to make doubly sure that things run smoothly.

In the event of me becoming ill or otherwise unavailable at the last minute, I have a group of back-up photographers across Scotland, hand-picked by me for their style and professionalism, who I can call on to step in (though I have never had to do this).
